Skin Rejuvenation with IPL
Skin Rejuvenation with IPL - It can remove veins and blemishes with little or no effect on surrounding skin. The light passes through the translucent skin surface without damaging it and affects the structure beneath. This method reduces the risk of scarring. Different kind of IPL machines are used based on what blemishes they are removing. IPL can quickly remove freckles, age spots, small blood vessels in the skin of the face and legs and melasma. After treatment, the area may become dark but resolves quickly.
What should I expect?
The depth and amount of melanin pigment dictate the number of treatments. Most brown or black spots can be completely removed with 3-4 treatments. Each IPL pulse causes heat when it contacts melanin pigment. This discomfort can range from a mild snapping sensation to more discomfort. Some patients tolerate treatments without any topical or local anesthesia. Your plastic surgeon will provide you with medication to alleviate this discomfort. To increase your comfort, a cold compress is applied to the treated area. It is common for your doctor to apply a test pulse as a safety check before treatment. Each pulse feels like being snapped with a rubber band. Cold air may be applied over the skin during the treatment to provide comfort and to counteract the skin from heat produced when the light contacts the hair root. Redness, irritation and blistering may occur. You will be provided with a soothing cream to ease discomfort and enhance healing. Irritation may last for several minutes.
How should I prepare?
Sometimes a topical anesthetic can be used before IPL treatment but to be effective, it may need to remain in place for at least 45 minutes before it's anesthetic properties take effect.
What are the risks?
Some patients may experience several side effects such as pain, redness, swelling, blistering or hyper or hypopigmentation. Pain may be controlled with medication prescribed by your physician. Blistering may be the most noticeable side effect from laser hair removal. All side effects are temporary however you may want to arrange time off of work until the blistering subsides. Hyperpigmentation is a darkening of the skin and does not necessarily have a remedy. It is more likely in patients with darker skin. It will resolve on its own. In rare cases, skin discoloration will be permanent. Hypopigmentation is a lightening of the skin and more likely in patients with lighter skin.
How do I ensure my safety?
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) treatment is a non-invasive treatment that uses light to minimize age spots and small blood vessels in the face. This is a very safe procedure with minimal risk of skin burns (similar to a sunburn) or pain.
What will recovery be like?
There is no downtime associated with IPL treatment in uncomplicated cases. Your physician will recommend the appropriate level of sunscreen necessary.
