What should I expect?

If you have ample buttock tissue but find that it is sagging, your buttocks can be lifted by removing the excess skin and then closing the incision at the top of the buttocks so that the incision can be covered by your underwear. If you have minimal buttock fat, then liposuction can be performed to any area of your body where fat is available (arms, abdomen, flanks, thighs) and then reinjected into the buttocks to fill the buttocks to the desired size. Approximately half of the fat will die after 6 months but whatever is left, usually survives. Therefore, your doctor may need to overfill so that you are left with an appropriate result after the excess fat has dissipated.

How should I prepare?

Refrain from taking aspirin, ibuprofen or certain herbal supplements, as these can increase the chance of bleeding. Be sure to disclose everything you are currently taking, regardless of how menial. Stop smoking and all other nicotine products several weeks prior to your procedure. Your surgeon will discuss the recovery with you as well.

What are the risks?

Patients should be aware that when transferring fat to the buttocks, face, lips or any place in the body, a portion of it will be reabsorbed by the body. The amount to be reabsorbed cannot be accurately predicted, however it will be evident after 6 months how much has remained permanently. The most serious, but most rare risk of fat injections is if fat gets into a blood vessel and is carried to the lung or heart. This is similar to a pulmonary emobolus caused by blood clots in the leg.

How do I ensure my safety?

Swelling of the buttocks after the surgery will subside after some time. A body garment must be worn 6-8 weeks following the procedure. You may resume work 10-14 days after the surgery.

What will recovery be like?

Be sure you have this procedure performed by an appropriately trained plastic surgeon in an accredited facility. Also, ask to see photos of previous results.
