The 2015 ESPN Body Issue

If you haven’t seen it yet, you gotta check out the 2015 ESPN Body Issue here. I’ll be honest, apparently I’ve been living under a rock because while I’ve heard of the ESPN Swimsuit issue for years, I’ve never heard of the Body Issue and it’s been coming out annually since 2009.

The athletes’ bodies showcased in the Body Issue are phenomenal. They’re basically Greek gods who’ve time traveled from the first ancient Olympics! And if you can’t tell already from the photo above, the ESPN Body Issue contains nude photos of athletes showing off their bodies in all their glory.

But here’s the irony. You know how we worry that society puts too much focus on what a woman’s body is “supposed” to look like by propping movie stars and models up on a pedestal? This may be the same thing but instead of glorifying women and men that have cosmetically-affected faces without wrinkles or silicone-enhanced breasts, we’re promoting men and women with unbelievably unattainable athletic bodies.

Just to be clear, I’m not criticizing ESPN over their body issue. I’m just saying that no matter how much I jog (5 days a week up and down the hills of San Francisco), I’m still going to get the same feelings of inadequacy whether I’m looking at the ESPN Body Issue or the Red Carpet at the Oscars – be it natural or unnatural features!
