Botox for the Gummy Smile

Is there anything Botox or Xeomin can’t do?! Aside from treating the jawline, Botox can also treat a gummy smile. That’s right! If you show more of your gums than you’d like when you smile, Botox and its equally effective competitor Xeomin can help. But there’s a few things to keep in mind when using Botox in this area.

As you probably know, Botox and Xeomin relax facial muscles when injected under the skin. This is how the products lessen wrinkles in between the eyebrows, on the forehead and around the eyes (crow’s feet). Well, when you inject Botox or Xeomin into the upper lip, they relax the muscles that pull up your upper lip. So if your muscles aren’t pulling up your upper lip as strongly, less of your gums show, thus getting rid of your gummy smile.

But because you don’t have the same muscle function in your upper lip, there’s few things you won’t be able to do. It’s not earth shattering but if you aren’t expecting it, you might be a little freaked out. By injecting Botox or Xeomin to the upper lip, you won’t be able to suck out of a straw or pucker your lips. This function will return after the drug wears off but until then, warn your significant other that your kissing may not be up to par!

There is a surgical option to treat the gummy smile but it involves cutting your upper jawbone and wiring your jaws shut for a few weeks. Plus insurance probably won’t cover it. So if you want to check the cost of treating a gummy smile from a doctor near you, click here.
