Vertical sleeve gastrectomy is a relatively new procedure in which the surgeon removes as much as 60 percent of the stomach, so that its shape resembles a tube or 'sleeve' and restricts food intake. The vertical sleeve gastrectomy is usually done with the intention of performing another procedure, such as a gastric bypass, at a later time. The purpose of the two-stage approach is to make weight loss surgery safer for high-risk patients. Morbidly obese or high-risk patients are typically most appropriate for this surgery.
