Cheek Enlargement - Cheek enlargement is performed to achieve facial symmetry, enhanced cheek contours and greater facial balance. This can be accomplished with either implants (silicone or Porex) or fat injections.
What should I expect?
This procedure is generally performed as an outpatient operation under local or general anesthesia. A small incision is made in a location determined by your plastic surgeon and a pre-shaped implant is placed against the bone or fat is taken from your abdomen and injected into the area of hollowing in the cheek area to achieve the desired result. Possible incision locations include: under the upper lip above the gum line, beneath the eyelashes in the lower eyelid, in the hairline or through a facelift incision. The selection of incision will be discussed at the time of consultation. An individualized implant is set over the natural cheekbone contour, to be held in place by the patient's natural facial tissues. Usually, no dressings are needed.
How should I prepare?
Just like with any invasive procedure, all nicotine products should be avoided for several weeks before and after the procedure.
What are the risks?
The main risk with this procedure is risk of infection when using implants. Since this is not your own tissue, implants always have a greater risk of infection than if you are using your own tissue, such as fat. If infection or extrusion (exposure of the implant through the incision) occurs, the implant will need to be removed.
How do I ensure my safety?
Be sure to pick a surgeon that has training and performs the operation in an accredited facility. Also ask to see their previous work.
What will recovery be like?
Swelling following the procedure is moderate in most cases and will vanish gradually over 4 to 8 weeks. The days immediately following the procedure you may experience tenderness in the surgical area. This will only last a brief time. If you had fat removed from the abdomen and placed into the cheek area, remember that you will have some tenderness in the area of the abdomen where the fat was removed. Mild to moderate discomfort may occur and can be controlled with oral medications. Depending on where your plastic surgeon placed your sutures will determine their removal: Sutures in the mouth dissolve and do not need to be removed. Sutures under the eyelid are removed in 4 to 5 days. Sutures or staples in the scalp are removed in approximately 10 days.
How much does it cost?
In the United States, the average cost of a cheek enlargement is $4,763, according to BuildMyBod's 2020 Plastic Surgery Pricing Report. This includes costs of anesthesia, operating room facilities, and other related fees.
